Cha Cha Chicken

As you cruise along Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, ampoule CA, click past all the ritzy beach front hotels and the shops of the 3rd Street Promenade, cialis you will undoubtedly notice a brightly colored shack on the right side of the road as you head towards Venice.  This little gem of a restaurant is Cha Cha Chicken, purveyor of delicious Jamaican and Latin-tinged Afro-Carribean food.

This rainbow shack is one of my favorite restaurants, not only in the Los Angeles area, but also the entire world.  There is so much to love about this spot, so I’m going to break it down into three categories: food, drink, and ambience.

FOOD

Jerk Chicken Enchiladas

The food at Cha Cha Chicken is quite simply amazing.  However, if you don’t like jerk sauce don’t bother going.  The bulk of their menu  is composed of various types of chicken dishes, all smothered in their delicious homemade Jamaican jerk sauce.  These dishes include straight forward pieces of chicken, chicken wings, chicken tostadas, and chicken enchiladas (my personal favorite).  They also have an assortment of sandwiches, burrito style wraps, and soups if jerk chicken isn’t your thing.  Garnishing almost every dish on the side is their delicious dirty rice and black beans as well as some delectably sweet fried plantains.  Furthermore, if you are awake and coherent enough on a Saturday or Sunday morning, you can go there and get their amazing Brunch which includes the breakfast wrap, chicken hash, and sweet and spicy eggs a la jerk.  Simply put, this is some of the best food I’ve ever eaten.  I keep going back because I never get sick of it, so do yourself a favor and go try it!

DRINKS

Thirsty?

One of the most endearing aspects about Cha Cha Chicken to many is their BYOB policy.  You can bring as much of your own beverage of choice as you want to wash down your meal, be it beer, wine, or liquor (though I’ve never seen anyone bring liquor).  I recommend beer because it goes great with jerk chicken.  Red Stripe is an obvious choice due to its Jamaican heritage, but any light lager will taste great with the food there.  However, the BYOB fun is not the only beverage choice at Cha Cha Chicken.  Also available are their delicious aguas frescas.  On tap and freshly made every day, their assortmented flavors are amazing.  Available every day are Mango-Guava, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, and Lemonade.  My favorite is the Watermelon.  They also have specials from time to time, including one that blew my palette/mind: Strawberry-Cilantro-Limeade. Now THAT was a drink!!  If you’re into exotic Jamaican bottled beverages they also have Ginger Beer, Ting (grapefruit soda), Pineapple, Orange, and Kola Champagne.

AMBIENCE

Bob

Eating at Cha Cha Chicken is not only a wonderful culinary experience, it is also a wonderful life experience.  The atmosphere they create there is so chill and laid-back that you almost feel like you’re eating a in a shack restaurant in a Jamaican shanty town.  Located just steps from the Santa Monica sand and decorated in bright and colorful paintings and wall hangings, you really feel like you’re on Island Time while eating there.  Reggae colors adorn everything and the walls and fences are made mostly of old scrap metal and bamboo, just as they would be in Jamaica.  To top it all off, the soundtrack they have playing non stop is a splendid blend of reggae, world music, and afro-funk.  In any one sitting you’re likely to hear Bob Marley, Thievery Corporation, Slightly Stoopid, and so so much more.  Simply put, you will not find a more chill place to eat in all of Los Angeles.

If I haven’t convinced you to go try Cha Cha Chicken already, then please go see for yourself.  You will understand right away why this is my favorite restaurant in the greater Los Angeles area.
