Review – Sleigh Bells @ The Mayan – Los Angeles, CA – 02/21/2012

We showed up at the Mayan just around 10pm and there was still a sizable line at the door with people anxious to get in.  We knew ahead of time Sleigh Bells were going on at 10, shop so there was no one to blame but ourselves.   Check out this thread on the Goldenvoice message board for set times to many of their shows.  Just make sure to click through to the last page.   Black Bananas was the opening act and we missed them unfortunately.

When we got in the door Sleigh Bells was already on and the place was packed!   There was a really good vibe in the place and there is no arguing the show was SOLD OUT!  The Mayan is a really cool place to see a show downtown.  One of the great benefits of this place is how easy it is to get to a bar, purchase even if the 12oz. cans of Heineken are $7.  Profit margins.

The first thing everyone will notice when you listen to Sleigh Bells is they are LOUD!  Thank god I had some ear plugs with me.  I’m old now and I get headaches if I don’t wear ear plugs at loud concerts, but to be completely honest, if you get quality ear plugs the sound is much better with them.  Sleigh Bells are a really good reason for ear plugs.

I really enjoyed this show.  It was over by 10:55pm, but that wasn’t too short.  It was the perfect length.  Everything about the band’s stage presence is fun and just… rocking!  However, I do have one complaint.  Where are the beats coming from?  Sleigh Bells has guitar shredding riffs and sexy vocals over some serious heavy beats, but in concert the beats appear to come out of the ether.  There is no drummer.  There is no DJ.  There is no keyboard player.  It didn’t ruin the show for me, but it did seem like an element was missing.

It just seems like there has to be someone playing the tracks off stage and it would create a much better effect to have a touring musician do something that is visible to the audience.  Hopefully with the success Sleigh Bells is having, they will be able to take it to the next level and incorporate more live elements in the future.

Overall, the sound was great and the crowd was in it to win it.  I would highly recommend Sleigh Bells to anyone who likes to rock.  They are doing an international tour right now with stops in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands.  Check out their website for dates http://reignofterror.tv
