Hook (1991) – Movie Review

Posted on 31 July 2011 by Bryan

So, discount one of great things about my AT&T Uverse service is when its working it’s got a lot of channels and a bunch of stuff to watch onDemand.  Fortunately for me, my service happened to be working this past weekend and a favorite childhood classic was playing on one of the 1800+ channels.  (If you can’t tell, I currently have a love/hate relationship with AT&T.)

The 1991 Stephen Spielberg film “Hook,” an adaptation of the classic Peter Pan tale, received a pathetic 27% on RottenTomatoes.com from critics.  However, the audience rated the movie quite a bit higher with a score of 72%.  I side with the barbarian horde and say this movie is AWESOME!

Look, just because the exposition in the film is exhaustive doesn’t mean the movie sucks.  Hook was released on the day before my 9th birthday in December 1991 and I think we can all agree its obvious this is a children’s film.  So, let’s critique the film for what it’s trying to be, an fantastic adventure for youth about how great it is to be young and irresponsible.

One word incapsulated this feeling in 1991 for me…  R U F I O

What 9 year old wouldn’t want to be like this punk rocking, back talking, leader of the Lost Boys with a red triple mo-hawk??  And the guy turned out pretty cool in real life too.  He was the the shoe designer in that episode of Entourage where Turtle tries to get an exclusive pair of sneaks early and he was even harassed at The Grove by TMZ!

Even though it looks like Rufio likes to hang out with family and friends at a local mall, we all know he loves to party at heart.  That’s what this totally rad 90’s flick gets the WAPA stamp of approval.  Oh, and because of my favorite scene in the movie.  You’ll just have to watch to understand…

By the way, I didn’t realize until recently that Hook was played by Dustin Hoffman.  It probably had something to do with the fact that I was 9 years old at the time, but his performance was great nonetheless.  Rock and Roll Dustin Hoffman for being one weird ass entertaining fuck!
