Damon Albarn Talks 2012 Plans

Working with Blur, Flea, Tony Allen, and Bobby Womack, plus a solo album

Damon Albarn has been one of pop’s great multi-taskers for years, but 2012 is shaping up to be an especially headline-heavy year. Just this month, he’s finishing up three albums– his project Rocket Juice & the Moon with Flea and Tony Allen, a new record from soul legend Bobby Womack he helped write and produce with XL Recordings’ Richard Russell, and a “strange pastoral folk” record of songs he wrote for his Doctor Dee opera last year. He expects all three records to see release before the summer.

And oh yeah, he’s rehearsing with his old buddies in Blur, too, though he was playfully cagey about that admission when we spoke with him on the phone from London last week.

“Oh,” he stumbled when pressed on why Blur were currently rehearsing, before asking someone nearby, “I can’t say why we’re rehearsing with Blur, can I?” After a pause, he clarified to us, tongue firmly in cheek: “No, I’m not rehearsing with Blur. [laughs] Oh god. I don’t know whether I’m coming or going, to be honest with you. I’m mad. Everything I say is delusional.”

Maybe so, but Blur are set to reform once again at this year’s BRIT Awards on February 21, and guitarist Graham Coxon recently told The Daily Record that “there will definitely be another Blur album.” The band’s last studio LP was 2003’s Think Tank.

Aside from that, Albarn’s starting to work on what would be categorized as a solo record, though he says “that’s a very foolish term for something that will inevitably require a cast of thousands.” And in light of his forthcoming Gorillaz-themed collaboration with James Murphy and Andre 3000 for Converse, he’s not ruling out another record from his cartoon group either. “I always leave the door open on everything,” he says, talking about the future of Gorillaz. “Unless it gets too drafty. And then I close it. But I prefer an open door to central heating. And I definitely prefer it to AC.”

VCR Monster – Dangerous

Posted on 06 September 2011 by Bryan

Over the weekend we were very fortunate to have an amazing local duo perform at the Bikini Car Wash for Somalia.  VCR Monster just recently came to my attention and, pharm without any exaggeration, physician I’m totally blown away.  Jordan Matthew Kennedy (guitar/vocals) and Andrew Serrato (Producer/Drums/Synth) are a shining example of what a duo can accomplish with modern technology, talent and vision.

With a sound reminiscent of Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz, but decidedly unique, I couldn’t help becoming immediately captivated by their most recent release “Dangerous.”  Check out the 5 song EP below and make sure to keep an eye out for these guys around LA.  You might find them at a WAPA event again in the very near future!

  1. Dangerous
  2. Repeat
